Adopting a furry companion is one of the most rewarding things you can do. The benefits of having a companion animal are endless and can even include such emotional benefits as reduced anxiety. It has been shown that people who own pets live longer on average, too. Adopting a pet from a rescue or a shelter may also save the life of the animal, as many animals in shelters are scheduled for euthanasia.

WHY ADOPT?Often, puppies that come from puppy mills or backyard breeders have a host of health issues, many of them genetic (that may not show up right away). Dogs are often inbred and kept in appalling conditions. To buy a puppy from a puppy mill or back yard breeder is to fund inhumane conditions for animals. As an alternative, adopting an animal is a fantastic experience for the adopter and adopted animal. While any animal may take a little while to adjust to their new home, we find that adopted animals have a certain quality to them that we can only describe as thankfulness.

WHY IS THERE A FEE?Adoption fees help to cover rescue-associated costs such as vetting, dog food, emergency care, supplies, behavior training, heartworm/ flea protection, and many other necessities to ensure the animal's health and well being. The adoption fee does not usually cover all associated costs with the animal, so we also rely on donations to bridge the gap. For example, the cost to spay or neuter one animal is $90, and the cost for full vetting is $250. This cost does not cover any medical emergencies or specialty veterinary treatment. RESCUE OR SHELTER?While adopting from a either a rescue or a shelter is a fantastic alternative to buying, some differences exist. Rescue animals have been taken out of shelters and often receive more in-depth vetting and behavioral assessment. Since a rescued animal is placed in foster care until they are adopted, the foster parent can often give an accurate description of the animal's personality, allowing us to better place them in the perfect home. Also, by adopting an animal from a rescue, a foster home is made available to take in another animal from the shelter. Either way, an animal is being saved!
